July 21, 2006, Newsletter Issue #18: Notebook Hard Drives: Buy the Biggest One You Can Afford

1

Tip of the Week

Notebook hard drives are a unique breed. They're smaller -- 2.5 inches instead of the 3.5 inches found on a standard desktop PC hard drive. Because of the extra-small size, notebook hard drives cost more, which is one of the reasons why laptops are so much more expensive than desktop PCs.

Generally, you'll see a range of sizes from 60GB to 100GB for your laptop. In some cases, the notebook has a removable hard drive; many others do not. It's really a matter of personal preference and whether you think you might want to upgrade the hard drive before you replace the notebook itself.

Most laptop drives run at 5200 RPM or 7200 RPM to keep heat, sound and power to a minimum. With advances in microchip technology, everything in notebook computers today runs much cooler than just a few years ago, so it's easier to run the faster hard drive without worrying about excessive heat.

Bottom line: Get the biggest, fastest hard drive you can afford for your notebook PC. Otherwise, you may face an expensive and difficult upgrade.
