October 6, 2006, Newsletter Issue #27: SD Cards: New Kids On The Block

1

Tip of the Week

Secure digital cards, also known as SD cards, are the up-and-comers on the digital camera scene. SD cards, similar in size and use to MMC (Multimedia cards), are the single most popular digital memory cards for digital cameras. SD cards were originally designed to hold copyrighted musical content and stop unauthorized distribution. They didn't work well for that purpose, but their small size and low power consumption made them favorites of digital camera makers. These cards have capacity of up to 4 GB and are similar in price to compact flash cards. There are also mini-SD cards, which are identical to regular SD cards, but with a much smaller foot print. These cards haven't yet been used in digital cameras.

Bottom line: Secure digital (SD) cards are the most popular digital memory cards for digital cameras because of their small size and low power consumption.
